The challenges faced by special schools extend beyond those encountered in typical educational environments. With a diverse spectrum of needs ranging from mild to profound and complex, the concept of a one-size-fits-all solution does not work. Additionally, the vulnerable nature of the pupils necessitates the collection and collation of large amounts data for each pupil.
However, off-the-shelf behaviour or safeguarding applications, primarily designed for mainstream settings, often fall short; either due to high costs, cumbersome interfaces, or an inability to accommodate the intricate data collection requirements, particularly for such things as physical interventions.
Driven by the unique nature of the pupils under their care, special schools often naturally develop distinct language and operational protocols that reflect their individual setting which can be difficult for standard software solutions to replicate. Consequently, special schools often resort to managing a complex amalgamation of spreadsheets, paper-based records, and partial software solutions.
Say goodbye to inadequate, generic applications, and embrace a system designed to cater to the unique demands of special education settings. Simplify your data collection, monitor interventions, and foster an environment where every student receives the individualised support they truly need – at a cost you will find surprisingly affordable!

From 1 April 2026, schools in England have been working under updated Department for Education guidance on restrictive interventions, including restraint and seclusion. The guidance says schools should record significant incidents as soon as practicable and should endeavour to do this no later than the same day. It also says parents should be informed after relevant incidents, with the same expectation that schools should endeavour to do this no later than the same day.
For special schools, where behaviour support, safeguarding, physical interventions and parent communication often overlap, this makes a clear and reliable recording process even more important. IRIS Adapt helps schools keep incident details, follow-up actions and communication in one place, making it easier to maintain accurate records and demonstrate compliance.
IRIS Adapt also helps special schools manage parent communication in a way that reflects their own internal processes. If a school wants parents to be informed immediately, we can configure the system to send an email automatically as soon as the incident is recorded. If the school would prefer a member of the senior team to review the record first, we can also support an approval step before the communication is sent.
Where schools prefer to send written information home, IRIS Adapt can also generate custom print templates to produce a note or letter detailing the intervention on the same day. This helps special schools keep parents informed promptly, while making sure the communication is clear, consistent, and directly linked to the recorded incident.

Lexden Springs is a special school having both day and residential pupils. The school caters for pupils with special educational needs, specifically severe learning difficulties, profound and multiple learning difficulties and autism spectrum disorder. As well as providing bespoke systems for logging pupil accidents and incidents in school, we have also created custom logs for the residential staff to record pupil activities morning and evening. We have recently added a custom nighttime log for night shift staff to record their hourly checks and observations.
IRIS Adapt’s refined access control allows both teaching staff and residential staff access to all relevant information regarding only the children in their care. Residential staff can be alerted to incidents which may happen in school and have access to all the details. Similarly, school staff can review the AM and PM logs for their pupil before the school day begins. The result is seamless and effective communication between all staff, school and residential.

Yes. IRIS Adapt can be configured to help special schools record physical interventions, restrictive practices and follow-up actions clearly and consistently, while keeping related records together in one secure system.
Special schools often need to manage behaviour records, safeguarding concerns, communication logs and physical intervention records at the same time. Keeping these in one system reduces duplication, improves communication and makes oversight much easier.
