Intervention reports may include the circumstances leading to the use of restraint, the techniques used, and the outcomes.
Schools may also wish to record additional details such as the duration of the intervention (with or without start and finish time), which members of staff were involved or which parts of the child’s body were held during the intervention.
However, conventional behaviour applications often fall short in capturing the detailed information required. This is especially true with extended interventions which may involve different members of staff at different times during the intervention.
The result is that the account of the intervention becomes largely a narrative description. Where this is the case, it becomes difficult to spot patterns and trends and the opportunity for statistical analysis and refined notifications is limited.

Case Study
Lexden Springs is a special school having both day and residential pupils. The school caters for pupils with special educational needs, specifically severe learning difficulties, profound and multiple learning difficulties and autism spectrum disorder.
As well as providing bespoke systems for logging pupil accidents and incidents in school, we have also created custom logs for the residential staff to record pupil activities morning and evening. We have recently added a custom nighttime log for night shift staff to record their hourly checks and observations.

From 1 April 2026, schools in England have been working under updated Department for Education guidance on restrictive interventions, including restraint and seclusion. The guidance says schools should record significant incidents as soon as practicable and should endeavour to do this no later than the same day. It also says parents should be informed after relevant incidents, with the same expectation that schools should endeavour to do this no later than the same day.
