Previously we had a significant number of incidents & serious incidents that were being recorded on paper documents. This was causing a problem in terms of the capacity for storing years of incident reports but also it made analysing the data from the reports very time consuming and inefficient.
We had tried to adapt the incident reports to make them more concise in their format, yet ensure that they were accurate. However this was not ideal and also it didn’t resolve the issues of storage and making data analysis more accessible.
We now use IRIS Adapt to log details of incidents & serious incidents (i.e. those incidents that require a physical intervention.) We can now easily access and use the information to look at individual, whole class and whole school behaviour patterns. We then use this information to support the needs of our children and help to improve their behaviour and management of emotions. This will give us the data we need to reduce the number of incidents within school. I can now see immediately how many incidents are happening at specific times of the day which means that we can target these times of day with interventions/strategies to support children.
The key benefit is easy, quick and accurate access to incident and serious incident logs and the wealth of data readily available. As the person who analyses the data, it makes my job so much easier than before. I don’t have to wait for people to hand in their incident files and I can review individual children’s incidents throughout the term rather than just on a half-termly basis. It makes it so much easier to analyse a whole range of data which was previously either difficult or impossible to obtain. It has shortened the process of effective analysis by at least one working day per week for me.
Outcomes
We now have up to date information on individual pupil, whole class and whole school data which helps us to plan effectively to support and improve the behaviour in school and to put systems in place to reduce the number of incidents.
It also makes it much simpler for staff to input the information. All staff are now confident to record incidents, whereas previously it was a small group of key adults. This in turn reduces under-reporting and ensures that all incidents are logged. It has given us a much more accurate picture of the incidents occurring in school.
The thing we like best is it’s a very simple way of finding the exact information we need about specific classes, children, times of day etc; so that we can immediately use it in our strategies and interventions to support children.
About the school
Ashgate Specialist Primary Support School meets a wide range of disabilities and special educational needs, including severe and profound and multiple learning difficulties, autistic spectrum disorders and behavioural, emotional and social difficulties. All pupils have a statement of special educational needs or are undergoing statutory assessment. The school also provides outreach support to other primary schools in the locality.
The school serves Wythenshawe and South Manchester. Both of these districts have been identified as areas of high social deprivation. The proportion of pupils eligible for the pupil premium is high. A very high proportion of pupils are eligible for free school meals; very few pupils are looked after by the local authority. A higher than average proportion of pupils are from minority ethnic backgrounds and an average yet increasing number who have English as an additional language. Eighty per cent of pupils are boys. The school has achieved a gold award in the Healthy School programme and the Active Mark recognition for physical education.
